Answer for Question 1 tips

1)    Question 1

Ø Audio waveform (definition/ describe)

Waveform means the shape and form of a signal such as a wave moving in a solid, liquid or gaseous medium.

Ø Sound characteristic (what is the importance?)

Properties of sound waves:

o    Wavelength

The distance between any point on a wave and the equivalent point on the next phase. Literally, the length of the wave.

o    Amplitude

The strength or power of a wave signal. The "height" of a wave when viewed as a graph.

o    Frequency

The number of times the wavelength occurs in one second.

o    Velocity or speed

The speed or velocity in air and other gases depends on temperature.

Ø Digitization audio signal

This term consists of two steps :

·         Sampling – Measure the signal values at discrete intervals

·         Quantization – Restricting the value to a fixed set of

levels.

·         Done by ADC = analogue to digital converter.

·         DAC - digital to analogue converter the conversion of digital audio to a line level signal for playback or distribution.

Ø Audio compression (lossy/ lossless) (Mp3/ FLAC)

Lossless Compression:

FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec

·         does not remove any information from the audio stream

·         suitable both for everyday playback and audio archival

Lossy compression

·         used in applications like MP3 players or computers, digitally compressed audio streams used in video DVDs; streaming media on the internet; satellite and radio broadcasts.
